TRUTH about abortion:
You cannot be a Christian and be Pro-Choice
--it's completely against the Church. Christianity has always condemned killing -- the killing of one's self or the killing of another, be they born or unborn. People can argue the "science" of it all...whether life begins at conception or at birth, etc. But the truth is that, not only does life begin, but the soul is also given to that life -- from the moment of conception. Nobody wants to consider the soul that they are destroying in this sinful act of "choice". Luke 1:44 tells us that the child in the womb of Elizabeth (John the Baptist) leapt with joy when the Virgin Mary came to greet her, carrying in her womb the unborn Christ. Abortion is not a new thing, Holy Fathers of the Church have written about it since the beginning, speaking not only of their times but with the knowledge of times to come when abortion would be rampant (today!): In the 2nd Century letter from Mathetes to Diognetus, it was stated that unlike the Pagans, Christians do not destroy their offspring. Saint Basil the Great in the 4th century instructed that the woman who destroys her unborn child is guilty of murder, the difference of formed or unformed makes no difference. He also stated that those who give the drugs or the procedure that result in abortion are also guilty of murder. The Orthodox Church knows that a child is a supreme gift from God, the Creator, under the condition that man should respect that. St Paul taught that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and is God's to do with as He pleases. But we are not God and are foolish if we believe that we have the right to destroy that which He has created. One may make the argument of rape or incest, of defects or danger to the mother. What needs to be understood is that in any of these situations, if a woman has become pregnant, IT IS BECAUSE GOD CHOSE IT TO BE so. From that point forward, they are to take up their cross, bear the struggle and follow Him. For a woman in an unwanted pregnancy that means to take up the cross of their pregnancy, bear the child and not harm it in any way. Only HE can give life and a soul and it should only be HE to decide when that life ends, not us. ALREADY HAD AN ABORTION? Fear not. It's never too late to repent and ask forgiveness for our sins. God knows the thoughts and situation of each and every one of His creatures. Whether they have been coerced by family, been raped or have suffered greatly during a pregnancy, He knows the pain and the struggle that tempted you to make your choice. But He is merciful and just and will forgive those who truly repent and seek to walk the right path. These women, too, can be led back to the grace of God and find salvation. But woe to the unrepentant abortionist, for they shall perish. |
